Hate With and Without Makeup

This article is about the criticisms that came with Alicia Keys' decision to wear no makeup. Keys recently showed up to the Video Music Awards back in August with no make-up; instead of her being praised with positive comments, she was criticized for showing up with a bare face. The crazy thing about this is that today, we are encouraged to be ourselves and embrace our natural beauty, but as soon as one of us goes out with no makeup just our natural faces, we immediately get hate for it and receive negative comments such as “You look way better with makeup.” Of course not all comments are negative, but most of them are. Whenever women do wear makeup they get comments from both men and women saying things like, “You wear too much makeup” but when they don’t wear makeup they get comments like, “OMG, are you sick? You look dead.”  Because of comments like these women have a hard time being themselves and feeling comfortable in their own skin. Keys wrote in an essay back in May for Lena Dunham’s Lenny, “I don’t want to cover up anymore” and that this was the “raw and real” her. We should all respect why Keys decided to go cold turkey with this no makeup thing and allow whoever wants to join the #nomakeup movement join it, and and as for the people who want to continue wearing makeup do so freely. Rather than putting women down, we should respect them whether they do wear makeup or not..
