Recently in media a controversial issue has become a major topic of conversation across the nation. The famous San Francisco 49ers NFL player Colin Kaepernick has made it his personal agenda to protest the National Anthem during his football games. He started in the preseason games and the latest against the Green Bay Packers has sparked a national interest in his decision. People began to realize that he was seriously dedicated to his cause. It is a unique approach to open the eyes of the nation to the unjust of racism and the way he carries it out is extremely bold. His argument is that he shouldn’t stand for a flag where the nation openly oppresses African Americans with no remorse. The recent police incidents really took a toll on his commitment to protest the National Anthem. In America you are allowed to express your First Amendment freedoms, so he is not legally liable. There are people who believe that you should be honored to stand up for the American flag and that his actions are dishonorable. On the other hand, there are also those like a few of his teammates that understand where his position is coming from and respect his decision. Race is a major issue that America still has to deal with or else no one will ever truly feel comfortable in their own skin. It will take people coming together and realizing that this conflict must be solved in order to accomplish true harmony in the United States. Kaepernick is risking everything that he has worked for to use his platform to speak out against something that he is immensely passionate about.
