Song Analysis Panic! at the Disco

Panic! At the Disco, Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off

This song and video tell the story of a woman cheating on her significant other and of the anger the man feels toward her due to her infidelity. The song discusses how the woman will never find a better lover than the man, “I’ve got more wit, a better kiss, a hotter touch, a better fuck than any boy you’ll ever meet.” He tells her that he hopes her cheating was worth losing their relationship, “And how I hope to God he was worth it.” The song then continues to discuss promiscuity in the relationship and relationships in general.
In this peculiar video, the people walk around the city with fish bowls on their head, the fish inside representing the amount of lovers they have had. The woman of the video stumbles upon a stray fish in the road and picks it up and puts it in her bowl, symbolizing a new lover. She then approaches a dead man lying in the road with his fish bowl broken. She recognizes the man as her husband and realizes he must have killed himself as a result of her adultery. She experiences flashbacks of their life together and becomes distraught over the thought that the man she loves is dead due to her actions and decides she should kill herself as well. Their bodies are then taken to the ocean, likely representing the afterlife, where they are free to live without the fish bowls on their head, and although there are thousands of fish in the sea, they are happy together, as they are now in an ideological zone where infidelity does not take place.
